Brixton Rooftop – Review #THEBEACHISBACK

I went to Brixton Beach as it was known then, last year, and was a little underwhelmed. It could have been the cloudy haze in the sky but for me, it didn’t quite pop.

But this year it is back, with a new Cubana theme, and something about it has changed. It has pizazz. It also looks entirely different, with, I think, a lot more beach, even though now it’s formally known as Brixton Rooftop.

Upon entry, you are greeted by the hanging gardens of Brixton, a covered area with a decorated Perspex covering that still feels outdoors but will provide shelter when it rains.

The food has upped its game too, now including Tim from Masterchef’s Nanban and new kids Del 74 tacos (who have a permanent place in Clapton). They have managed to pack in quite a few bars on the beach considering the space, as well as lots of booths/cabanas ideal for a group outing. There’s also a ‘nightclub’ area and a stage so it’s set up for some serious entertainment.

The weather was warm and the deck chairs were full when I went along to sample the place. Nanban didn’t disappoint with the chicken karaage I had and the plantain katsu curry (delicious sauce but a bit too much plantain for one person – those slices were mega!).

Beers, wines and bubbles are on offer and also – not to be missed from a beach bar – alcoholic frozen drinks. As dusk turned to night the Cuban feel to the place became more prominent and you felt like it was ratcheting up for party time. Or would have, had it not finished at 11 – come by on the weekends to soak up the party vibes for longer.
